Mock (Simulated) Food Recalls - Who Needs To Do Them?

Ministry of Prime Industries (MPI) announced earlier this year that as of 1 July 2023, businesses with a plan or programme under the Food Act, including importers and exporters, must carry out a simulated food recall. The regulations state that a mock or simulated recall must be conducted at least every 12 months following a simulated recall, or an actual recall.

What about food service businesses?

MPI has now confirmed that food service businesses such as restaurants, cafes and coffee carts do not have to conduct a yearly mock recall and are not expected to have procedures for recalling food sold to consumers. It is not required because the food is sold for immediate consumption.

We can hear the sighs of relief from the hospitality industry - one less thing on the task list.

It's still important to remember that as a food businesses, you are part of the food chain and can still be affected by a food recall at any time. Make sure your team understand what a food recall is and what to do in the event that a product is recalled from a supplier. This includes documenting the details and actions taken during the food recall.

What if I sell packaged food?

If you are a food businesses that provides wholesale or packaged food, you will need to conduct yearly mock food recalls have recall procedures in place.
